「写真がインデックス記号のわけがない。何かの似姿であることだけが写真の取り柄。故に一義的に写真はイコン記号に決まっている。顔写真が、指紋ほどに、当人の顔貌に相似性がないと思うトンチキだけが、『写真はインデックス記号』と言うが良い。そしてもちろん写真を見て何かをイメージしてしまうのは、個人の勝手なので、『写真はイメージ記号』と妄想するのは何ら問題はない。以上を踏まえて、何にも似ず、なにも想起させず、そしてもちろん何も指し示していない写真にこそ、写真の彼方がおぼろげに浮かぶ。誰もそんなモノを望んではいない。しかしそこにこそ写真の本体が潜んでいる。みすぼらしく弱々しい写真の本体が~~遠藤弘先生の論議学講義に捧ぐ」展

Title ; "There is no way that a photograph is an index symbol. The only thing a photograph has going for it is that it is a likeness of something. Therefore, in a sense, a photograph is an icon. Only those who think that a mug shot has no more similarity to a person's face than a fingerprint can say that a photograph is an index symbol. And of course, it is up to the individual to imagine something by looking at a photograph, so there is nothing wrong with imagining that a photograph is an image symbol. Based on the above, it is the photographs that do not resemble anything, do not remind us of anything, and of course do not point to anything, that give us a vague idea of what is beyond the photograph. No one wants to see such things. But that is where the body of the photograph lies. The body of photograph that is shabby and weak"
